Dash

Offline API references and reusable code, searched from one window instead of a stack of browser tabs.
Docsets that stay on the disk
Setup starts in Settings, under Downloads. Kapeli’s catalog covers 200+ APIs – Apple platforms, Swift, Python, PHP, JavaScript, Go, Rust, and many frameworks – plus 100+ cheat sheets. Installed sets refresh in the background. Separate feeds pull Swift packages, RubyGems, Packagist, Maven, crates from docs.rs, Go modules, GitHub repos, Stack Overflow, and user-contributed sets. For anything missing, the Docset Generator copies a website or indexes local HTML, including JavaScript-heavy pages, and it accepts DocC, Doxygen, Sphinx, Javadoc, and similar archives it already understands.
Keep the languages you ship, not the whole list. In Settings > Docsets, drag sets to change which hits sort first. Keywords only search sets already on disk, so an empty result usually means the download never ran. Full-text search is optional per docset. With low data mode on, automatic docset updates stay paused.
Keywords, profiles, and the open page
The main field matches fuzzily. A docset keyword scopes one set even when that set is disabled: the user guide’s example is php:printf, which looks up printf in the PHP docset once it is installed. A profile keyword such as web: switches a whole collection. Profiles can also follow the frontmost app – one collection when Xcode is active, another when a different editor is – and they stay selected across launches.
Opening a hit shows the HTML page, a filterable table of contents on the left (Alt-Up and Alt-Down move through it), and in-page find with highlights. Tabs hold several references; two-finger swipes move back and forward. A shortcut in Settings > General calls Dash from any app, including a variant that searches the current selection. Plugins for Xcode, Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Nova, Alfred, and Raycast live under Settings > Integration and use the dash:// URL scheme.
Snippets, assistants, and the yearly plan
Snippets, toggled under Settings > Snippets, replace a short abbreviation with saved text in any app. Placeholders in double underscores stop so you can type a variable name; @clipboard, @date, @time, and @cursor are built in. Put a symbol in the abbreviation, such as a backtick, or a normal word will expand in the wrong place. Expansion needs Accessibility permission and stops while another app leaves Secure Input on, often a browser. The library can sit in a Dropbox or iCloud Drive folder. @cursor is unreliable in apps that do not expose accessibility.
Installed docsets can also be queried by an assistant through MCP, enabled in Settings > Integration, or through an HTTP API that returns JSON. That search reads documentation already downloaded. Kapeli sells a yearly Paddle plan titled Dash Yearly. At research time Germany showed €24 including tax and the US showed $28.20, with zero trial days on that product; the download is still described as free to try. Old one-time licenses were grandfathered only into the previous major version, for two years from purchase. Setapp lists the app and, for this build, macOS 10.13.9 or later. Homebrew installs one zip for Intel and Apple Silicon, and the app updates itself. Version 8.2.0, published on 20 October 2026, documents a fix for bugs and interface issues that appeared on macOS 27 and Xcode 27.
