MindNode

An infinite canvas for branching ideas, with a hierarchical outline when the same notes need a straight reading order.
Building a map on the Mac canvas
Open the in-app document browser and start from one central title. With a node selected, Return adds a sibling and Tab adds a child; Option-Return inserts a sibling above the current node. The node well, the plus control beside a node, creates a child where you click, or you can drag it to pick the parent and the gap. Hold Option and use that control to fold the branch. Escape ends title editing, and the Mac toolbar can be rearranged to keep fold, style, and export actions within reach.
When a straight reading order helps, switch that document to Outline. The free editor can show that outline; editing it belongs to MindNode Plus, along with notes, visual tags, connections that are not part of the tree, focus mode, full themes, links between documents, Shortcuts, stickers, live collaboration, and Apple Intelligence brainstorming. Export to OPML, Markdown, PDF, or PNG stays on the free editor. Plus adds SVG. Tasks attached to nodes can stay in sync with Apple Reminders, and the task menu can hand items to Things or OmniFocus.
Where the free editor stops
The download is free. IdeasOnCanvas lists Plus at $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year on its US download page, with a trial. One subscription covers Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro, and the vendor says it can be shared with family. Setapp is another route for the Mac, iPhone, and iPad apps; the Vision Pro app stays on the App Store. Apple Intelligence actions need both a supported Mac and Plus, so they are not part of the free editor. There is no one-time license for this generation of the app. Freeform, which ships with macOS, is a loose whiteboard. This app fits when the idea has to stay a tree you can fold, outline, and export; Freeform fits when you only need a sketch with no hierarchy and no subscription.
iCloud and the October update
Documents live in your iCloud rather than on IdeasOnCanvas servers. Live collaboration is described as end-to-end encrypted. Sync expects an iCloud account, and offline edits merge after the Mac reconnects. The vendor requires macOS 15.0 or later, and the build runs on Apple silicon. Machines on older systems are outside this release; the company still ships MindNode Classic as a separate legacy app. Version 2026.6.2, published on 5 October 2026, adds a full Ukrainian interface.
