Open Picmal, drag in a folder of HEICs, MP4s, FLAC tracks, or PDFs, and choose Convert, Compress, or a specialized tool such as Slideshow, PDF merge, or images-to-PDF. Each row shows its own progress, default format rules can map HEIC to WebP while leaving PNGs untouched, and output lands beside the source with predictable naming. Over 100 formats are supported across still images, RAW, video, audio, and PDF, with batch resize modes for width, height, percentage, or max file size in the same pass.
PDF, video, audio, and vector tools

PDF tools merge documents, split pages, and compress text-heavy exports by re-encoding embedded images while keeping selectable text intact on article-style files. Video jobs can export through Apple’s hardware H.264 and HEVC encoders; audio jobs handle MP3, AAC, FLAC, and related formats, including extracting audio from video when you need an MP3 from an MP4. A separate Vectorize tool traces bitmaps to SVG paths. The direct-download edition adds picmal-cli for scripting, a Raycast extension, and watched folders that auto-process incoming files. Mac App Store builds share the same conversion engines but omit CLI, Raycast, and folder watching.

Standalone licenses cost $39 for two Macs or $69 Pro for five, activated with a license key, free updates, and a 14-day refund. The Mac App Store build is also $39, adds Family Sharing, and needs no license key, but it excludes picmal-cli, Raycast, and watched folders. There is no free trial on either channel-you need a purchase before processing files, though you can install the app first. The current 1.8.5 build requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later on Intel or Apple Silicon Macs.
Compared with Preview and ffmpeg scripts

Preview covers basic single-file exports but struggles with mixed batch rules, slideshow builds, PDF image recompression, or folder automation. Hand-rolled ffmpeg commands scale forever yet demand syntax memorization and manual naming. Picmal sits in between: repeatable drag-and-drop batches, readable warnings when a file cannot shrink further, and optional CLI patterns when a coding agent or cron job should rename and convert a directory overnight.
