Verso Writer

Someone emails a Word file; you revise it on the page and save that same .docx.
The file stays a .docx
You open a .docx, .doc, .odt, .rtf, or plain-text file from Finder, or you start from a template. The file stays in the folder you picked. There is no document library and no account to sign into. Styles, tables, footnotes, headers, footers, numbering, comments, and tracked changes are written back into a Word file. Anything this editor does not implement is left in the .docx instead of being deleted, so the next person can still open those parts in Word.
Markdown is a second full round trip. A .md file opens as formatted text, with headings, lists, tables, and code blocks, and saves back to Markdown. Mermaid blocks in those files draw as diagrams. HTML opens as rich text through the system converter and then saves as .docx or another supported type, not as HTML. Complex pages and script-heavy layout will not come through cleanly. RTF keeps text and footnotes and may drop images, headers, and comments. A plain-text save warns you before layout is stripped.
Review marks on the page
The formatting toolbar sits centred over the page. Beside it, an inspector splits Format, Comments, and Changes, and citations open in their own panel. Page size, margins, columns, and header switches live on the Format tab. A footnote opens in a popover, and a table of contents lists headings below the cursor so you can refresh page numbers after editing. Track changes underlines insertions and strikes deletions, with Accept or Reject on the Changes list. A comment highlights a span, allows a reply, and stays in the .docx.
On a long piece, the outline jumps to the heading you click. Focus mode clears the toolbar and sidebars, dims paragraphs you are not writing, and fades the window controls until the pointer reaches them. No-Paper mode removes page edges for a continuous column. Page colour can be light, grey, sepia, dark, or automatic, while print and PDF stay on white. A control in the status bar shows one page or two, pairing page 1 with page 2. Find and Replace floats under the toolbar on macOS 26 so the first line is not covered; on macOS 14 and 15 the same controls sit in a bar above the page. Citations search Zotero on this Mac, or a bibliography file you load.
When the trial locks editing
The Mac App Store download is free, about 18.1 MB, and it runs on Apple silicon and Intel from macOS 14. For 14 days every editing tool is available. After that the window becomes read-only: documents still open, scroll, and print until a $14.99 in-app purchase unlocks writing again. The payment is once on that Apple Account, and later updates are included. Documents stay in ordinary folders. The developer reports no telemetry; the routine network call is a daily update check that Settings can turn off. There is no cloud library and no macro system. In 1.0.56 the window follows macOS 26, seven templates open as finished samples, and headers grow instead of clipping.
